As you may have seen with my entry about Tarsiers, I have become rather interested in unique creatures that somewhat scare the shit out of me. What you see below is a Giant Japanese Hornet, and from the looks of things, you never want to meet one.

These hornets live right outside Tokyo, can fly upwards of 50 miles a day, and presumably kill around 40 people each year.

While stopping by Digg.com today, I also read this hilarious comment… “Instead of stinging you, it just scares you to death.” I then proceeded to continue doing research on these gigantic hornets periodically throughout the day.

The video below, courtesy of National Geographic gives a first look into how these creatures live and behave, which is “aggressive” to say the least. Here the giant hornets band together to slaughter an entire European honeybee hive within minutes. Not purely for the sake of terror, some evolution babble has to go into the frenzy. The hornets need the honeybee larvae which they feed to their own offspring for weeks.

Cracked.com listed the hornet as one of the “5 Most Horrifying Bugs in the World.”

The economy is throwing numbers at the public that are just nearly impossible to understand. How can we as a people judge one economic stimulus plan versus another if we cannot determine the difference between 1 trillion and 3 trillion dollars?

The video below is called The Crisis of Credit: Visualized. It attempts to depict the economic meltdown through a nicely done animation. Until the government figures out how to effectively communicate to the masses, maybe they should turn to creative mediums.

“The goal of giving form to a complex situation like the credit crisis is to quickly supply the essence of the situation to those unfamiliar and uninitiated.” Crisis of Credit is a nice project by Jonathan Jarvis. Thanx to my buddy Casey for pointing me to this.

On the 40th anniversary of the Internet, WE LIVE IN PUBLIC tells the story of the effect it is having on our society as seen through the eyes of “the greatest Internet pioneer you’ve never heard of”, visionary Josh Harris. Award-winning director, Ondi Timoner (“DIG!”), documented his tumultuous life for more than a decade, to create a riveting, cautionary tale of what to expect as the virtual world inevitably takes control of our lives.

The trailer is a deep look into the psychological aspects the internet and technology has played on our culture. It’s more than just another film about what we’re doing and where we’re going. It may entirely be a prediction that becomes reality if we’re not careful.

This video is called A walk in the mountain with Julie by Sébastien Abes. Out of all of the video and motion work that I’ve been consuming, this stuff has really captured my imagination.

The subtle emotions that are hinted through syncing music with vivid natural experiences, such as opening your eyes (when the video begins), or when the video speeds up to blur motion. Towards the end of the piece, notice the subtle digital undertones… It’s great.

It’s very easy to hear or read a headline such as “Israel Rehearses Attack on Iran Nuclear Center” and immediately think, “oh jeez, when will this end…” Well, it’s a little more complicated than that. Without going on and on, Israel is playing a major part in stopping (or attempting to stop) the world from slipping into World War III. By stopping Nuclear Missiles from being developed, or demolishing the center where they have the potential to be developed, Israel is potentially stopping a major terrorist attack (that by law breaks the trust rules of war).

Ya see, terrorists don’t play by the rules, they are fanatics. If you speak to any experienced veteran, or anyone who has battled in the line of duty, amongst high levels of pride you’ll find intelligent explanations and rationalizations of war being a “chess game.”

Well, if these attacks go as planned (if they happen at all), consider this Check-Mate against Iran’s Nuclear Missile Dreams.

What would Iran do with Nuclear Missiles anyway? Why do they need them?
